COVID-19

COVID-19 is the most recent example of a unique emergency. Treating infected patients where the first responder is at the same time placing themselves at risk of becoming infected. Also, responding with a sick patient to a hospital only to find the hospital emergency rooms were overloaded and having no space for any additional patients.

Several hundred firefighters have died of COVID-19 from treating COVID-19 patients. The Foundation provides firefighters with personal protective equipment (PPE); self-contained breathing apparatus; sanitizing supplies; extractors to clean PPEs of chemicals, blood, and viruses.

Vallecitos

During a Foundation visit to the Rainbow fire station, the firefighters indicated that there were safety issues at the Vallecitos School a block from the station. Upon visiting the school, Foundation staff were shocked to see the condition of some of the buildings. Some had roofs which leaked and outside walls with holes in them, both leading to moisture and mildew in classrooms. In addition, some wooden ramps to the restrooms and portable classrooms had boards missing and the wood covering over the outside eating area was rotten and could potentially collapse. Lastly, the playground equipment was dangerous with wood splinters and the AED in the office area was non-functional. The school is in a poor agricultural area with mostly Hispanic students many of which spoke English as a second language. The School had serious financial issues and focused on academic performance. They needed help to fund the needed repairs. The Foundation raised over $90,000 to grant for the repairs. Once the repairs were made, a local church brought in volunteers and painted the entire school.
